Dear colleague,

The Organizing Committee has the sincere pleasure to invite you to participate in the 9th International Conference on the Geology of the Arab World (GAW 9), which will be held at Cairo University, Egypt (24th. – 27th. March, 2008). We are honored to receive you in Cairo and we will work hard to provide an exciting opportunity for all participants to share experiences and have fruitful discussions on the Geology of the Arab World, and related topics from other countries.

For first-time visitors to Egypt, “Land of the Pharaohs", Greater Cairo, on the serene River Nile, is the capital city of one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and the city of 1001 minarets. Generation after generation of Egyptians have left a rich legacy of art, architecture, and literature that is many thousands of years old. Among the salient attractions are the Pyramids and Sphinx, the Egyptian museum of Antiquities, the Islamic, Coptic and Modern Art museums, the Citadel, the Cairo Tower, the royal palaces, and the Opera.

The weather in Cairo is hot and dry all the year around, but March typically has clear skies and pleasant sunny days, with temperatures around 20°C and occasional, brief rain showers. Accommodation is easily arranged, as the city has several choices of three- to seven-star hotels at reasonable rates, and at a short distance from the Conference venue.

Our choice of pre- and post-conference field trips will give us the opportunity to illustrate the geology of interesting areas in Egypt and some Arab countries. Short courses will also be offered for those who are interested in learning more about certain topics from outstanding lecturers.

Please, note that both the excursions and short courses are limited to a certain number of participants; so reservations will be made on a first-come, first- paid basis.
